Bursary Description

The Federated Employers Mutual Assurance Company (FEM) invites ambitious undergraduate students to apply for its comprehensive bursary programme for the 2027 academic year. FEM is committed to investing in young South African talent and fostering the next generation of industry leaders by alleviating financial obstacles to higher education. This funding initiative is specifically targeted at high-performing students who demonstrate genuine financial need and wish to complete qualifications that support the built environment, engineering sectors, and healthcare fields.

Through this programme, FEM aims to build empowered communities and develop critical skills across South Africa. Successful recipients receive robust academic and financial assistance to help them focus entirely on completing their degrees without the disruptions associated with university tuition debts. The bursary targets continuing full-time students who have demonstrated strong academic resilience during their initial year of university study.

Bursary Coverage & Financial Benefits

The FEM Bursary Programme provides holistic support designed to ensure recipient wellbeing and educational success throughout their study period:

  • Coverage of full-time tuition fees paid directly to the registered South African public university.
  • Prescribed textbooks and compulsory study materials required for registered modules.
  • A designated monthly living stipend to support day-to-day academic and transport expenses.
  • University-approved student accommodation and meal allowances, granted subject to FEM discretion and institutional arrangements.

Ideal Candidate Profile & Core Attributes

Applicants must show exceptional dedication to their academic discipline, combined with integrity, self-discipline, and proactive leadership qualities. The bursary programme prioritizes students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who maintain consistent academic performance and actively demonstrate an ambition to contribute constructively to South Africa's socio-economic development.

Learning, Mentorship & Career Progression

Recipients of the FEM bursary gain peace of mind, allowing them to excel academically and position themselves favorably for professional employment upon graduation. While the primary focus is financial support, awardees become part of an esteemed network of funded students across key faculties, equipping them to build meaningful careers in essential health sciences and engineering infrastructure disciplines.

How to Apply & Submission Guidelines

Eligible students must apply online via the official recruitment portal. The initial process requires completing an online questionnaire, after which shortlisted candidates will be provided with the detailed FEM bursary application form. All completed forms and mandatory verification documents (including certified ID, official academic records, parental income proofs or affidavits, and social grant documentation) must be submitted no later than 16 November 2026.
