Bursary Description

The Sasol Foundation is a prominent initiative dedicated to fostering educational development and empowering South African youth. For the 2027 academic year, the Foundation is extending an invitation for applications to its comprehensive undergraduate bursary programme. This initiative is specifically designed to support academically gifted learners and students who hail from Sasol's local communities, are children of Sasol employees, or are children of Sasol Khanyisa shareholders. The core mission of the Sasol Foundation bursaries is to broaden access to higher education, with a particular focus on assisting students from low-income and 'missing middle' households, thereby contributing to a more equitable and skilled South African society. The bursary programme is structured to accommodate a diverse range of academic pursuits. It offers significant support for students aiming to enter STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, aligning with future economic needs such as the Green Economy and Digitalisation. Additionally, dedicated bursaries are available for non-STEM qualifications, ensuring that students pursuing a variety of disciplines can also benefit from this valuable opportunity. Applications for the 2027 intake are scheduled to be open from 1 August to 23 August 2026, providing a clear window for interested candidates to submit their applications.

Who Should Apply

This bursary programme targets South African citizens who are pursuing or intend to pursue their first undergraduate degree. Applicants must demonstrate strong academic performance, with a minimum average of 60% for all modules for students entering their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of study. For first-year applicants, completion of matric within the year of application or the preceding year is required. A strict age limit of 25 years at the time of application applies. Specific criteria differentiate applicants for STEM and non-STEM bursaries. Non-STEM bursaries are exclusively for children of Sasol employees, Khanyisa/Inzalo shareholders, or individuals from Sasol's fence-line communities. A crucial requirement for all applicants is a combined household income not exceeding R800,000.00 per annum, with a priority given to financially needy yet academically competitive candidates. Applicants must be South African citizens by birth.

Why This Bursary Stands Out

The Sasol Foundation Bursary is distinguished by its comprehensive, all-inclusive support for undergraduate studies, significantly easing the financial burden on students and their families. It places a strong emphasis on nurturing talent in critical STEM fields, particularly those aligned with South Africa's future economic drivers like the Green Economy and Digitalisation, thereby contributing to national development. The bursary also offers a clear pathway for students from disadvantaged backgrounds and Sasol-affiliated communities, promoting social mobility and equal opportunity. Furthermore, the programme's focus on future capabilities suggests potential links to mentorship and career development opportunities within Sasol, offering a valuable springboard for graduates entering the workforce.
