What is a bursary in South Africa?

A bursary is financial assistance given to a student to cover tuition fees, accommodation, books, and sometimes a living allowance. Unlike a student loan, a bursary does not need to be repaid - though some bursaries require you to work for the sponsoring company after graduation.

What is the difference between a bursary and NSFAS?

NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) is a government-funded scheme for students from households earning under R350,000 per year. A bursary is typically offered by a private company, government department, or foundation, and may cover more expenses. Many students apply for both.

When do bursary applications open in South Africa?

Most South African bursaries open for applications between March and October for the following academic year. Some corporate bursaries (like Sasol, Eskom, and Anglo American) open as early as April. It is best to check each bursary's website directly and apply as early as possible.

What documents do I need to apply for a bursary?

Typical requirements include: a certified copy of your ID, your latest academic results (matric or university transcripts), proof of household income (parents' payslips or SASSA letter), a proof of registration or acceptance letter from a university, and a motivational letter.

Can I apply for a bursary if I am already at university?

Yes. Many bursaries are available to students already enrolled at a university, not just matric leavers. You will usually need to provide your current academic results, and some bursaries require a minimum pass rate (often 60% or higher).
