FUCHS Lubricants South Africa invites ambitious, forward-thinking engineering graduates to kickstart their technical careers through the Application Engineering Internship based in Isando, Johannesburg. As the world’s leading independent supplier of innovative lubrication solutions, FUCHS delivers mission-critical technical formulations across global industrial, automotive, and mining sectors. This comprehensive engineering internship offers recent graduates hands-on industry exposure, working alongside experienced technical professionals, conducting field assessments, performing oil data analysis, and supporting customer trials in demanding operational environments across Gauteng.
Technical Knowledge Acquisition: Master industrial lubricant formulations, operational applications, safe handling protocols, storage practices, and standard lubrication engineering principles through formal coaching and technical mentorship.
Field Evaluations & Surveys: Shadow senior Application Engineers and technical sales representatives on scheduled client site visits, plant inspections, and comprehensive machinery lubrication surveys.
Data Collection & Diagnostics: Accurately capture operational machinery parameters, operating temperatures, equipment maintenance logs, and lubricant run-times to support maintenance engineering teams.
Trial Testing & Monitoring: Assist in setting up, conducting, and monitoring field trials, practical product demonstrations, and engineering performance assessments in live industrial facilities.
Reporting & Documentation: Compile structured client visit summaries, product comparison sheets, technical data presentations, and trial reports using enterprise-standard technical templates.
Laboratory & Oil Analysis Support: Collaborate with technical analysts on interpreting used-oil analysis results, running comparative product benchmarks, and executing targeted engineering research.
Administrative Tracking: Maintain meticulous records of technical trials, complete structured learning modules, and submit regular internship milestone deliverables to the engineering mentor.
At FUCHS, individual contribution and innovation are actively recognized and developed. Interns benefit from direct mentorship under registered professional engineers, exposure to multinational manufacturing standards, and cross-discipline learning spanning mechanical, chemical, and materials engineering. The company cultivates an entrepreneurial environment where emerging talent gains hands-on technical competencies that establish a robust foundation for long-term career growth in South Africa's industrial and engineering landscape.
Highlight Technical Coursework & Final-Year Projects: Tailor your CV to emphasize relevant modules such as fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, tribology, materials science, or chemical process operations, highlighting any practical design projects or laboratory testing experience.
Demonstrate Industrial Aptitude & Curiosity: In your cover letter, articulate a clear, demonstrated interest in industrial machinery reliability, tribology, and lubrication technology, showcasing practical problem-solving capabilities rather than purely abstract theory.
Showcase Analytical & Technical Tools: Explicitly mention your working familiarity with Microsoft Excel for data analysis, technical report compilation skills, and any exposure to laboratory testing equipment or CAD software.
Candidates shortlisted for this technical role should anticipate questions testing both their foundational engineering principles and their field readiness. Two probable interview questions include:
"How do viscosity, temperature, and operating pressure influence lubricant selection in heavy industrial rotating machinery?"
"Describe an instance during your academic studies where you collected field or lab data, analyzed an anomaly, and communicated your engineering findings clearly."
Candidates can practice articulating their answers and refine their communication skills using the YouthNextStep Interview Simulator.
