Job Description
Mr D, a prominent division of the Takealot Group, is actively seeking a highly motivated and talented Junior E-Commerce Category Manager to join their dynamic team in Cape Town. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to a hyper-growth company at the forefront of South Africa's e-commerce landscape. The successful candidate will be instrumental in driving the growth and performance of specific product categories, working within a fast-paced and innovative environment where learning and career expansion are highly valued. This position is ideal for an ambitious individual eager to make a significant impact and grow within one of the country's leading digital commerce platforms.
Purpose of this role
The Junior E-Commerce Category Manager plays a pivotal role in focusing on and enhancing the growth and overall performance of a designated category, which could span areas such as Pets, Convenience, Liquor, or Pharmacy. As a Category Manager, you will adopt a proactive approach, taking full ownership of the end-to-end management of your assigned category. This position demands close collaboration with various stakeholders, including external partners, internal merchandising teams, operations, and other cross-functional departments, to effectively execute category strategies and maximise commercial outcomes. You will be at the heart of ensuring Mr D's offerings remain competitive, relevant, and appealing to its vast customer base.
Key responsibilities / accountabilities
- Category Ownership: Fully own and drive the performance of a specific shops category on the Mr D platform. This includes developing and implementing strategies to achieve category objectives, monitoring key performance indicators, and ensuring the category's health and growth.
- Execute and monitor growth plans for the category, including orders, Gross Merchandise Volume, and store expansion. This involves analysing market trends, identifying growth opportunities, and executing initiatives to increase sales and market share.
- Ensure category coverage by identifying new product opportunities and expanding ranges through existing and new partners. This requires a keen eye for market gaps and the ability to forge new relationships to enhance product diversity.
- Partner Management: Manage relationships with partner groups within the assigned category, ensuring consistent communication and alignment on commercial goals. Building strong, collaborative relationships with partners is crucial for mutual success and achieving category targets.
- Ensure partner listings are accurate, up to date, and optimised for visibility on the platform. This involves regular audits and working with partners to enhance their presence and discoverability.
- Collaborate with partners on product availability, pricing strategies, and promotional campaigns. This requires strategic thinking to develop competitive pricing and engaging promotions that drive customer engagement and sales.
- Partnership Development: Identify, negotiate, and establish partnerships with relevant businesses and organizations within the assigned vertical. This involves market research, outreach, and negotiation skills to bring new, valuable partners onto the Mr D platform.
- Collaborate with partners to develop joint marketing initiatives and promotions. Creating synergistic campaigns that benefit both Mr D and its partners is key to expanding reach and customer acquisition.
- Evaluate and optimize existing partnerships for mutual benefit. Regularly assessing the performance of partnerships and identifying areas for improvement or expansion ensures long-term success.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with the merchandising team to ensure optimal category representation and visibility within the app. This involves working closely to ensure products are displayed effectively and align with overall merchandising strategies.
- Drive category-specific campaigns, including seasonal promotions and thematic sales (e.g., holiday gifting for liquor, pet care essentials). This requires creativity and coordination to execute timely and relevant marketing efforts.
- Work closely with marketing, tech, and operations teams to ensure a cohesive approach to category management and execution. Effective cross-functional teamwork is essential for seamless strategy implementation and problem-solving.
