Job Description
The City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality is calling on driven, community-minded South African youth to apply for the Relief Worker opportunity within its Community Development Department. Based across various library facilities in Johannesburg, Gauteng, this youth development initiative provides hands-on municipal workplace exposure over an eighteen-month fixed-term contract. Successful candidates will support essential public library operations, enhance information services for local patrons, and gain foundational public sector experience designed to build lifelong employability.
Key Responsibilities
Assist the Senior Librarian and Librarians in rendering frontline Library and Information services to public visitors and youth community members.
Handle general administrative operations including circulation desks, user registrations, book shelving, and basic cataloguing support.
Provide friendly customer service and guide library patrons in locating research materials, books, and public digital resources.
Assist patrons with basic computer usage, internet searches, and educational public access tools within library resource centres.
Maintain orderliness, quality standards, and cleanliness across the reading halls, study desks, and media sections.
Uphold the Batho Pele principles in every daily citizen interaction to drive excellent community service delivery.
Perform weekend and shift duties totaling 40 working hours per week as designated by municipal scheduling.
